Years ago, before I joined Toastmasters, I muddled my way through a speech in College by putting on the role of a "good" speaker. I could have done better by practicing and receiving feedback first, but I have to say that stepping into the role made the speech easier and better.
On Saturday, my somewhat shy daughter put on the role of usher in church. It was a big event celebrating the 40th anniversary of the building of the church with the retired arch bishop in attendance. Among the other duties of an usher, she brought up the offering and was later thanked by name by the bishop.
What must a shy kid be thinking at this point? She shrugged it off. I suppose stepping into the role makes it easier.
What new roles will you step into in the New Year? Whether you think you are ready or not, Toastmasters is there to support you. Putting on a role is the first step, sometimes that first commitment is the most important step in contributing in a new way.
